Lohri is considered to be one of the most joyous festivals of India and why not! It is the festival of the Punjabis. They are considered to be very fun loving and big hearted people. Every year, Lohri is celebrated on the 13th of January. It is one of the most important festivals of the sikhs. It is celebrated in abundance in Punjab and the northern states of India.
Why Is Lohri Celebrated?
Lohri is celebrated on the night before Makar Sankranti. It is considered to be the coldest night of the year. This festival marks the end of winter season. After Lohri, the night becomes shorter and the days get longer.
People are filled with joy during Lohri. It also signifies the harvest season. Farmers come together and thank the Lord for the good harvest of the year.
The festival of harvest is very much related with the Sun, Earth and Fire. They are the most essential elements for the survival of mankind. All these elements are given to us free of cost by the Lord. So, on the occasion of Lohri, people pray to God for providing us with Sun, Earth and Fire.
How Is Lohri Celebrated?
One of the most significant thing about Lohri is the bonfire. Without it the festival remains incomplete. The God of fire is worshipped during this sacred festival.
During the morning, children go from door to door singing the traditional songs. These visitors are often given money in exchange of their songs. It is a part of the culture and rituals of Lohri. It is believed to be a bad omen to send the kids bare hand.
As night comes, people lit up bonfire and gather around it. They perform certain rituals and then start enjoying this glorious festival. They sing, dance and eat heavy meals.They throw sweets, puffed rice and sugarcane into the fire. It is kind of a tradition to do so. The various folk songs are sung by the people. They dance in groups to the tunes. Dhol is an inseparable part of the festivities. The sound of Dhol makes the air merrier.
The prasad of Lohri is also amazing. It consists of sesame, jaggery, peanuts, gajak and popcorn. They sit around the bonfire and dinner is served there itself. One of the most famous dishes of the Punjabis- Makke ki roti and sarso da saag is served in this particular dinner. Various other savouries also make its way into the grand feast.
Another significant thing about Lohri is the exchange of gifts between family and friends. People bathe and dress up in new clothes on this festival.
Children are an important part of Lohri celebration. They stay very excited as they are showered with gifts and sweets. Thus, Lohri, the festival of harvest is celebrated with great pomp and honour.
