Essay on National Bird Peacock

This is an essay on the national bird Peacock.

Peacock is a big bird, with extremely mesmerising and beautiful wings. It’s beauty has helped it in gaining the title of the national bird of India.

It has different colour combinations (violet, blue and green or simple white), which makes it unique and special among the birds. It’s long and slender neck withholds beauty and grace, which adds more points to it’s beauty.

It is found all over the country. It’s wings are very long  and have moon like spots on them, they have a shape of an eye and are violet in colour.

These spots shine when the peacock dances, as the sunlight falls directly over them. Peacocks have small and elegant crowns/crest on their heads. They are considered as the king of all the birds. But because of the weight of their wings, peacocks cannot fly higher, that is, they can only fly a limited height and not for a long time.

Peacock is a male bird whereas Peahen is a female bird and in comparison to peacock, peahen is not so attractive and beautiful. Peahen also lacks crown on the head. It is said that peacock dances only when there is rain, he loves rain a lot.

They are generally found in fields and gardens where there is warm temperature. That is why it is mostly found in states like Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. They are omnivores, that is, they feed on both vegetation and small animals.

They generally feed on grains, snakes, insects etc. They are of a great help to the farmers as they kill all the unwanted snakes and insects from the agricultural fields, which hinders the growth of the crops and can cause loss to the farmers.

People uses the peacock’s feather for decoration purposes or scaring of lizards and snakes from the house. It is a delightful experience to watch a peacock, especially it’s dance.

Pavo Cristatus is the scientific nomenclature given to peacock. They have been a consistent part of our Indian culture and history.

The Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan had made a peacock shaped throne for himself, which was later called as the Peacock throne.

Peacocks are of two types – one is the Indian Peacock and the other one is the Burmese Peacock. There is only one difference between these peacocks, i.e. the Burmese Peacock’s crest/crown is very much pointed where as the Indian Peacock’s crest/crown hosts a tuft of hair.

This bird can adapt itself in any kind of weather conditions- dry, humid or cold climates.  They love to dwell in the places that have a permanent source of water as they cannot fly for a longer time.

They sleep on the branches of the trees, preferably lower branches. Peacocks have large groups and avoid being alone. They are very timid and shy creatures.

Because of their strong legs, a peacock can run very fast. They have a very high pitched and a shrill voice, on a cloudy day you can hear these voices.

They are highly aware and alert of their surroundings and can alert the other birds by making this sound. They are an integral part of our ecosystem and should be protected.
